There was a promise and a purpose. Of course it was all part of the plan so that neither of them would fall victim to the harsh realities of what splits relationships apart in this world: time and distance are the real devils of losing touch. Even with all the technology and instant communication.
Tito and Samuel told themselves that it would be okay. Okay no matter what. They told themselves this because they were more afraid than they could admit and even more afraid than they knew. Tito was sick and the doctors didn't seem to know why. Or maybe they were bad doctors, but it didn't matter. Samuel lived in Minnesota and so no matter how native he sounded when he spoke Catalan, he couldn't stay in Segovia with Tito. It terrified them that no one knew what ailed Tito but also that Samuel had to leave and go back to his family. At 18 and 19, they were young and to be separated like this with so much uncertainty was more than they could bear. They both knew they were stronger together, so they made the promise to give them strength when they were apart. They really promised it, to. They didn't just say it like a, "We should get married if we're both still single at 40," kind of promise.
"Te prometo que escribiré una carta cada mes." I promise I will write you a letter every month.
"y te prometo, Samuel, que escribiré una carta cada mes." And I promise you, Samuel, that I will write you a letter every month.
And so it was that they would write a letter every month until one of them could visit. But, tickets were expensive, and besides, Samuel's family wasn't supportive of his Spanish studies, so they weren't looking to help pay for anything related to travel.

My seven minutes are definitely up and I'm not sure where this is going anyway... I know that it is pretty general and my descriptions are lacking, but thoughts on it are appreciated!

I really liked this! I think it definitely has the potential to be a longer piece if you wanted, expanding on the doctor situation and the actual promise. It's so sweet and intriguing! The very end is the only place where I think it's a little rushed, but I understand the time limit you had. Great job, Shannon :)
