The Impossible is Exhausting
many people simply look at a sunset and
bask in in the way it slowly blossoms open like a basic rose
peach and tangerine orange a shaded hue -
Just Letting You Know
Do you see that girl over there?
The one sitting on a curb, swinging her legs
back and forth,
and playing with her coarse braids
as she talks quietly to her tattered teddy bear -
you can
if you close your eyes real tight, and squeeze them closed, you can
imagine a world where the cost of labor is favored over the cost of a future
where words on a paper are priceless, glimmering nuggets of precious gold -
preschool names
i stare blankly at the people around me
so similar yet so different
an average lady donning a brightly colored bucket hat,
the edges slightly frayed in some edges -
my perfect photo family
a crisp photo, freshly printed, is held in my slender, quivering hands
sniffling, i carefully pull the frayed edges of my indigo hoodie over my wrists
the one that engulfs my petite body
through glazed eyes, the shapes and colors blur -
i miss you
we used to
giggle under our shared covers, our battery-powered flashlights lighting up
your almond eyes, perfect dimples, button nose and the quilt above us
