The girls drum their fingernails

Their nails extend
Two nail lengths past

If they didn’t last time why
Would they now
If last time the world was on fire
They put it out with water and wrote about it in the news and got themselves quoted

How the sky cries
The sky cries
with rain.
The sky snows for every whispered secret
from under thick blankets
in the dark
for the kid in everyone
that finds joy
the sky hugs with snow.

A girl
In the elementary school
Had to walk around
In an old grey T shirt
Way to big for her
Because
A sliver of skin
Not much thicker than my thumb
Was showing
And the teachers

I used to walk into a theater and it was salvation.
Stage lights and people who filled up a room,
I was happy to watch them for hours.
I wanted to become some part of that
some part of the instant admiration
