and for my mom
i want you to sit and stare at the glistening horizon.

Three years ago,
You said forever.
And I repeated it,
It left a sweet taste in my mouth.
Like sugar poured onto a lemon,
Covering up the sour bitterness. -
you are
you are an ocean,
a transparent abyss of blue
that could swallow someone whole,
waves battering against thick grains of sand.
you are a battlefield,

And then there were two,
Sitting on a bench by the bus stop.
Waiting.
Watching.
Two kids - teenagers - then young adults.
On different sides of the same story.

she talks to me about the paper snowflakes she plans to make this weekend, and so i refrain from telling her that my bedroom has been decorated since the day after thanksgiving.
