you're so pretty

and i pray every night

that you won't cry again

about those pounds gained

or those pimples

in the feather-soft skin of your cheeks

it hurts me 

how you forget

i'm getting good

at smiling like it's no big deal

i can laugh and joke

i'm getting good

at masking my pain 

pretending everything's alright

makes it easier 

to get through today. 

My computer is dead again, 

It's another excuse not to write. 

My hand is cramping from playing, 

But all the songs don't sound right. 

They don't quite understand it, 

Your laughter reminds me of the shoreline  

as the tide goes in and out,  

as fireworks pulse overhead,   

your favorite beach towel with the toadstools  

I think it’s absurd

And how we define worst

You must be smart

But not too smart

Never ugly

But you can’t look too pretty

That means your trying to hard

the wind buffets my windows 

great gusts gushing to greater heights 

they keep me in my home by keeping me out of their home 

but i'm fine with that
