I've never attended to a sick loved one in a hospital waiting room, yet I felt that I was there, experiencing that anxious anticipation alongside you. There is a sparseness to this piece that works to its advantage, adding to the "sterility" you describe.

I have read the sequel liked it a lot! I also really enjoyed One for the Murphy’s.  I think you would like Greetings from Witness Protection, it’s also about a foster kid but is a bit different in the way she comes into the family’s lives. Definitely worth a read if your interested.

They almost look like rock formations! I swear I can see a mountain range rising up, surrounded by smaller outcroppings of rock. I wonder how this effect might evolve if you repeated the experiment with food dye added!
