Apathy

Apathy, never hatred
I, myself was born with apathy
Deaf to the conflict that surrounded me
Although it had eaten at everything I saw.

But as I touched the hands and hearts of my family
I had forgotten apathy
Trading it simultaneously for love
How lucky I was to know love

It built a barrier
So I never could've returned to apathy
So apathy couldn't become bigotry
But now I know

There are some who were given push after shove
To return to apathy
Trading it for hate
A silent transformation

Although enduring apathy leads to prejudice,
Apathy always loses to omnipresent love.

Apathy, never hatred
Is the inherent quality which is a see-saw

It can either be tipped toward love
Or it can keep falling,

falling,

falling

Into a void where it is so easy to hate.

Apathy, and then hatred.
