Grow Up

When I come home from school

and my parents ask how my day was

my answer is almost always

"Irritating"

or

"Bad"

or

"A pain in the butt".

Why?

Because my classmates will

scream

jump

sing

during class,

even body shame one teacher

screech at another because they don't want to

be there

even though they know that their teachers have

no power

over whether or not they can come to school

so therefore maybe

be quiet

and stop body shaming the math teacher

screaming at the language arts teacher

swearing left and right

singing TikTok memes

because

some of us want to learn

and

some of us need peace and quiet to work

but do they listen?

NOOOOOO

THEY COULDN'T LISTEN TO THE UNPOPULAR KIDS

THAT WOULD BE RIDICULOUS BECAUSE WE DON'T MATTER, RIGHT?

These kids haunt the middle school wing with their

artificial fruit-smelling perfume that they

spray everywhere

lip gloss that makes their mouths look wet and slimy and gross

skin-tight clothing that is

too revealing

(I'm sure that no one wants to see that much skin on your childhood friend who avoids topics of the past in case your past friendship with them comes back to haunt you)

and the school administration

doesn't really have any power over this

but does?

How would I know

because they don't exactly tell us those kinds of things

and the P.E. teacher gave up on making us wear sneakers a long time ago.

So,

therefore,

I have decided to

be weird

embrace my weirdness

and irritate the

snot

out of these kids

because

no,

I will never wear what you wear,

no,

I will not run around spraying perfume everywhere,

and no,

I will not join you as you bully the teachers and dance random TikTok dances

because

please

grow

up?

  • You Two

    Looking at you two

as you "dance" on the "dance floor"

which is really just an empty spot on the ground

    as you hold hands awkwardly

    though enjoying it

as you experience feelings that I've never experienced before.

  • Separation

It's always the goodbyes that are hardest

especially when you've gotten so close

    after years of distance

it's worst when you don't end up getting to spend the time you wanted to spend with them

  • Endless

    Card

    after card

    after card

    it keeps going

    the stack endless

    the family tree sprawling

    stretching

    growing

    by the second.

I have to write it all down
