To remember
Is to live in the past
Unable to forget
The wonder and happiness
That emerged from the darkness
To remember
Is insanity
To do the same thing repeatedly
Expecting a different result
To replay a moment in your mind
Wishing it would never end
Wishing you said something different
It’s mortifying
To be the one who remembers.

I’ve kept every card I’ve ever received
For as long as I can remember
People fade in and out of your life
Eventually lost in the past, forgotten
I read their letters after sunset
I was eight when it began.
I was left clinging to sunshine
As the sun descended below the horizon.
It all started as a blank page
Until slowly, painfully,
My heart began to bleed
Do you remember
The games of soccer
At the park?
Do you remember
The night we created our book series
Roasting smores over a firepit?
It’s where we took that first picture
