Okay, so this is a bit different from what I usually post, but I need to get some stuff off my chest. I recently watched the anime Death Note, (go watch it before reading this), and started re-watching it again, (cause finding a new show is hard), and there are a few things that are making me mad:
- Light fumbled Misa
- Light is an absolute idiot
- That's it
I'm mostly gonna be focusing on the 2nd thing. Quick thing, I am gonna try not to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't watched it yet.
Context: The show is about a high school student, Light, who finds a notebook, but whoever's name he writes down in the book dies. He decides to use it to rid the world of all evil and become the god of that new world, but there's something in his way because of course there is. He has to try and avoid L, the world's smartest detective, as he tries to find the identity of Kira, the name the people gave to the one riding the world of criminals aka Light, arrest him, and execute him for his crimes, cause mass criminal deletion is still illegal.
Throughout the whole show it's made obvious that it's a battle of the minds between L and Light to see who will come out on top. My only problem is that this could have all been avoided if Light wasn't an arrogant fool. As soon as he figured out how the book worked, he used it to delete 50 criminals in 2 weeks (when you write the name, the default death if none is specified is a heart attack within 40 seconds of the name being written down).
That of course caught the attention of the police, and then eventually L. If he had actually been a genius, he would have realized that if he deleted over 4 dozen criminals within a short time frame the same exact way all over the country, that that would surely catch someones attention. If he had slowed down, started deleting them to what would seem like accidents or self deletions, or even others deleting them, (later on he finds out he can control the actions of the person before they are deleted, as well as what time the deletions occur), then he could have gone on for much longer before anyone got suspicious.
Even if he did that and still got L's attention, the way Light handled it is laughable. You see, there's something I didn't mention. The book belongs to a Shinigami, a God of Death, and they will follow the owner of the book on Earth until the owner dies or the book is passed on to someone else. They can make a deal with the human for the Shinigami Eyes, an ability that allows you to see a persons name and remaining life span with just looking at their face, all in exchange for half of the human's life span. If Light wasn't so stubborn about being a "god" of his new world and wanting to rule it for as long as possible, he could have taken the deal and used the eyes to find L's real identity. Oh yeah also forgot to say that no one knows L's true identity. He's a ghost among men, solving crimes only he can conceive resolutions to.
Light eventually gets close to L, (I won't say how, don't wanna spoil), and the entire time we see L he is constantly eating, whether it be ice cream or candy or cake, you name it he's eating it. If Light had taken the eye deal, then he could have seen L's real name, written down that he would die from choking, then the world's greatest detective would be no more, and Light would be safe.
All in all it's an amazing show, a real battle of the minds and psychological thriller. I highly recommend you go watch it and let me know what you think!
