Metamorphosis

Maybe it was the wind whipping my hair every which way,
maybe it was the way ice cream tasted on a hot summer evening,
maybe it was just the delirium of lying there on that cool leaf-covered ground,
but in hindsight, I knew it was you.
You with your green eyes,
your arm linked with mine,
you who taught me poetry,
who made me know what gold really means.
You who called me by a nickname
No one had ever used for me before
But seemed perfect somehow.
You who laughed and cried and sang,
And god,
You who brought tears to my eyes.
You were baggy hoodies
And dangly earrings
And bright smiles
But that wasn’t all of you.
You were also the ground under my feet,
A laugh like tinkling bells,
The soft hug of the best friend I never knew I needed.
Within the blinding light of summer,
Something happened.
I changed, I transformed,
Became something I never knew I could be.
Maybe I was brave, maybe I was resilient,
Maybe I was awful and dumb,
And maybe you were
A visionary, leading her people to safety,
Or a pied piper, leading them to doom.
But either way,
It was all you.
It was all because of you.
And I think-
I’m glad it happened.

And who knows,
Maybe it was the wind whipping my hair every which way,
maybe it was the way ice cream tasted on a hot summer evening,
maybe it was just the delirium of lying there on that cool leaf-covered ground,
but in hindsight, I knew it was you.
You who set me free,
You,
Even though I’m not even sure who you are.
A person, a place, a feeling,
A metamorphosis.
Those all describe you,
And maybe that’s why I have a smile in my eyes
And tears on my face
Whenever you cross my mind.

I'm wearing the same dress I wore last year, on an evening that felt like moonlight even though the sky was still a milky purple-blue by the time we left, arms linked, laughter spilling over each other and turning the air fragrant, because back th

Today I thought I looked pretty

It must have been a trick of the light

I can't fall asleep in this city

I wish that you'd come stay the night.
