  • If we were

    If every girl

    Looked liked a boy

    Acted like a boy

    Was a boy

    Would we get farther

    In life

    Would we be respected

    If every woman

    Was a man

    Would we be valued

    Would we be able

  • We Are Your Legacy

    Dear leaders,

    You say you love us

    The children of your country

But you do what is best

    For you

    Even though

    We are the future

    Of our country

    We are your legacy

    How can you expect us

  • The Bird

I am the bird that everyone knows.

Never sees, only feels my presence.

Visible in your mind, noticeable in your heart.

My wingtips are dashed with anxiety,

my tail feathers streaked with frustration and loss.

  • Polaroid

I remember taking Polaroids with you

In the driveway of the house you’ve now sold

On a grey afternoon that looked like night

In the photos. We’d wait impatiently

  • Dear Canada

    Dear Canada,

You do not belong to us.

    You never have.

And I really, really hope you never will.

You are your own country, but I know I don’t have to tell you that.

  • tick tock

    A world which

    Begins with the

    Click of the

    Day, with

    Every tick

    From the clock

    Going round,

    Hounding the day till

    I drag myself out,

  • HANDS OFF

I’m standing there, minding my own,
Unarmed, no threat, just skin and bone.
But he sees me, and I’m already guilty,
Not for what I’ve done, but for how I look, for where I’ve been, for the color of my skin.

  • Inescapable

    The solidity of the darkness

    The ever-cascading waters

Sharp and dangerous, altogether hardly enticing

Await me wherever I wander within my mind.
