Shattering

Will we ever stop

Forming gaps for young children to fall through,

Teetering on the edge–          –swinging their legs.

Shrugging at the splinters young children practice on

To learn the art of leaping — across fractures in the sidewalk,

Dividing streets.

Can we ever stop picking at the crack,

Slowly unraveling the seams of a united flag?

Until in our hunger for red and blue,

We divide the stars and stripes.

How to patch the tear–

When entering a Synagogue, a Church, a Mosque we feel fear!

And we quake in our differences–

Until it shakes the very foundation of faith

And forms a new gap to fall through.
