side character

Unimportant

often forgotten

most times ignored in large groups

provides assistance

side character

never the main character

never given a chance to be the main focus

if at least for an hour

always the backup

most times not needed;

the main characters never need help

if they did, then they would be weak

pitiful

dependent on others

they'd be just as bad as a side character

side characters have no depth

shallow pools of water reflecting the world back at you

nothing below the iceberg

all can be understood on the surface;

if not, then they just instantly tell the main characters

instantly becoming best friends or worst enemies or the gross in-between

that is, if they even meet the antagonist

the main characters have it all

the side characters have all

yet none

there's always a center to the universe

and that's where the main characters are;

the side characters fan out around the main character

orbiting

forever

until they die to save the main character

and then their death is mourned for half a page

then everyone moves on

the side characters bear the burden of being in terrible conditions

dependent on the main character to help them

unable to be freed from a house with an open door

no one should experience that

even if it's to make the plot work

everyone deserves a chance and being seen

at being the main character

not just the side character

  • The creatures

    The albatross watched from high above

    at the calico cat slinking across the forest floor, a view of the situation from the ground among the trees and undergrowth

    the queen bee flitting around, ordering her subjects

  • Get up

    I'm watching you lie there, dejected, miserable at your idea of a failure. But it's not a failure if you got impressively high up on the leaderboard, if you got so close to winning but didn't.

  • Promise

    I stopped here. I ceased my walking and stood here, for as long as I needed to be until they came. I wait for them. They haven't come yet.
