Today I am afraid 
For today my life 
Lies in the hands of people

A destroyer 

Freedom is a thing

Written into the amendments

Into our hearts

Something we are promised

But promises break

And America's promise

Was never fully whole

It was always broken

Freedom is not

Oh, look at the leaves. 

Look at how they fly. 

Look at how they circle, 

Freckling the sky.

I walked today, amongst several colors of grasses and amidst winds that scraped and soaked my silver face, wet from the morning dew, and sore from the strong pull of the corners of my mouth.

You may not understand

What it is

To look your future in the eye

And have it blink

To not know

If your rights

Will be your rights
