I’ll travel millions of miles

When I was first brought into the boathouse, the outside world was different. The rowers were different, the clothes they wore were different, the oars they used were different, and the waters of the lake were clearer.

You left long ago

Yet your words still linger

Like a gaping wound

That never heals

Will I ever learn

To expunge the toxins in my veins

That you erected in my heart?

How do I celebrate? 

How do I cheer 

with masses of people?

How do I celebrate freedom,

knowing only half of me was set free today?

staring at the ceiling,

tears forming near the rim of my eyes,

blurring my vision temporarily of dread and misfortune.

taking deep breaths,

forcing the loneliness down the deep pit of my throat
