Some words are like stone,
stuck in my throat.
They just sit there,
and choke me.

The men were in the dining room,
huddled around the radio.
She had been told to go outside.

She ran up the stairs, her breath coming in quick, short puffs. She could hear yelling behind her, and people clambering up the stairs after her. -

Girlhood (In honor of International Women's Day)
I love being a girl
but I hate what it took
for me to be able to go to school
for me to know I will be able to vote
for me to know that I will be allowed to get a job when I grow older
