Pink

When I was little

My favorite color

Was pink

I wore dresses

To school

With matching

Floral headbands

Then I turned ten

And suddenly

Pink was bad

Dresses were bad

Headbands and long hair were bad

They were girly

And girly was bad

It was basic

Basic to be a girl

It was bad to like

Girly things

I didn’t know it then

But I know it now

This hatred of pink

That almost every girl

Feels at one point

Is because it’s engraved in the system

Pink is correlated with being a girl

This view of pink

Is fueled by underlying sexism

Our society

Basically told little girls

Not to like girly things

As if we should be ashamed

Of our gender

As if being a girl is bad

It’s not

Being a girl is amazing

So tell all the little girls

That you like their pink shoes

And sparkly dress

Tell these girls

To be proud of their gender

Tell these girls

That pink is your favorite color

Every book came with a key

A key that opened a door

    Into the book

    Into the worlds

    That are your happy place

    Escape from reality

    Beach trips and ice cream

Field trips and cheering on sports teams

    Late nights with fairy lights

    That feeling of bliss
