A Dream At What Cost
at the bottom of my bag is a book,
lying there like a security blanket I'm afraid to touch.
my seat feels cold as ice as I sit down in the room where not one pen or pencil is seen in sight,

leaving the heart
she takes the stairs,
her heels click clacking down the hardwood steps.
she turns the tarnished silver doorknob,
and the door creaks open.
before her sits a man.

too far to hold
I catch a glimpse.
from afar,
the shine of his silky hair in the golden sunlight
his expression unreadable,
as if he's pondering something he'd never tell a soul.

watching him
Kathy watched out her window as Samuel left his apartment,
spit his gum on the ground
and lit his cigarette.
the same as yesterday.
the same as every day.

The air is thick with heat,
Making me feel as if I’m drowning.
I keep walking, for the fear of going back propels me,
