Tiny Writes
I have a question for you all ;) My dream is to become a writer, whether it's in journalism or screenplay writing etc. I'm a freshman in high school and I was wondering if any of you have suggestions for how to get my writing out there and expanding my writing knowledge and just kind of setting me on the right path for that? (Other than posting on YWP of course :))
P.S. I know my question is very general, as I'm kind of stuck at the moment so any advice I would be grateful for!! <3

Hi! I’m also a freshman, and have been trying to do the same thing.
One thing you could do would be to submit pieces to your school’s school magazine (assuming your school has one).
Another thing would be to submit stuff to, like, contests and stuff, which is what I’ve been doing. It’s not a guarantee that anything’ll get published, because you’re vying for the spot amongst a bunch of other people, but it’s certainly a place to start. If any of this is helpful, or if you need any other ideas, feel free to let me know. :)
thank you so much for your suggestion is greatly appreciated :) Do you have any particular contests you like entering?
I dont have any in particular, but if you Google “youth writing contest”, you’ll find lots of results. Just be sure to read the fine print, as some may want to keep the copyright to your work.
That's awesome! YWP is a great start and one of the best places to keep all your amazing writing in one spot. I'd also check out the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. It's a huge contest but worth submitting your stuff to and you can earn some accolades. Also, look for opportunities to submit to literary magazines and local poetry contests like Fainting Goat said!
Thank you so much for your suggestion!! <3
Yup! Best of luck!
Fellow freshmen here, I know other people said this but enter contests! Even if you don't win there's no harm in trying! I recently also joined my school's writing club, if your school has one I really recomend it. It's pretty low commitment and you'll learn about some great opportunities. Check YWP news too, they share some cool contests and stuff there.
I'm not a freshman yet, but I try to expand genres. Dystopian, fantasy, realistic fiction - write about stuff you don't usually write about! Entering contests is also a great idea - and YWP helps a ton as well. You can also look back on some of your older books that you gave up on and revise them if you're looking for ideas. Other than that, I agree that submitting to a school magazine or newspaper is a great idea. Good luck!
thank you so much you <3 good luck to you as well and keep on writing!!!
Thank you!! Keep me posted on your progress with expanding your writing!
Hey there! Also a freshman, haha. What I've found most helpful is joining after-school clubs focused on writing. Whether it's just poetry or even full-length essays it can be really helpful to get inspiration from other writers, also people who like/love writing will be in those clubs so you could make many new friends if you put yourself out there! Good luck in high school we all know you'll do amazing! <3
Thank you so much for your input!!!! it is so helpful and so supportive!! Good luck to you too <3
Of course! Thank youuuu <3
