Tiny Writes
Quick question: I'm starting a newspaper for the 7th- and 8th-graders at my school (I'm a 7th grader), and I'm having trouble getting people to 1., check their emails for updates :), and 2., coordinate everyone (finding a day after school that works for everyone, etc.). I have around 10 of my peers on staff right now and I'm still trying to find a teacher chaperone and everything. Does anyone have any advice about getting the newspaper started successfully?

Does your school do announcements in the morning? If so, it might be worthwhile to try to get an announcement for it.
Oh, good idea! The only thing is I'm trying to control who gets in. I'm thinking maybe a screening process like audition pieces, just quick writing blurbs maybe so I can decide - I don't know. Thanks for your suggestion!
First of all, this is really awesome that you are taking the initiative! This can help a lot in the future with work/college applications if you plan to pursue higher education. Secondly, I totally resonate with this. Organizing clubs is a challenge. I suggest that you ask your principal (or whoever monitors that if they do) if you are allowed to make and put up some flyers. That's also a lot of work, however, the main goal for now is exposure. If that doesn't work then ask other teachers to tell their classes about it! Most of my teachers were chill about it and posted something to their class page or their bulletin boards. As to people not responding, it happens often. I'm not saying you should get used to it, but communication in clubs is especially hard in middle/high school, even in college. You could make a GroupMe to help get out announcements for the group, too! Totally free and easy! It also might benefit you to provide a plan for a chaperone teacher if you haven't already.
Hope this helps! Good luck, friend! If you need any help let us know!
Thanks so much! That's super helpful. I'll let you know how it goes :)
I absolutely love this idea! I tried to do something similiar… it didn’t really work out but hopefully you can learn from my failures! It’s super helpful to have a teacher(it’s nice if they are an english teacher to help with writing stuff) to advise you guys and take a bit of a leadership role. Also if your school has a weekly assembly or something like that you can try to get things announced during that time. Coordinating timing is really really difficult but I would consider making a google form and having people tell you what times work for them and pick the one that works for the most people.
This is super exciting, best of luck!
Thank you! I think it's working out so far. I definitely agree that having a teacher help is necessary. I did the Google form, and it's been super helpful! Thanks for the support :)
I use when2meet for my team meetings because you can see times when everybody is available. If you have a creative person they can make a nice looking social media post with a QR to the newspaper, or a little snippet of the newspaper you can post. Canva is great for this and people read with their eyes first so design is important! I’ve never started a newspaper before, but this is just from my experience :)
Thanks! I'll keep it in mind. That's really helpful!
