i bought pumpkin pie lip balm that tasted like
fall in california
even though i'm in new hampshire
and the leaves are curling.
the lights in sephora were sickly bright
like the lights
anywhere else, and the lip balm
was like lip balm
anywhere else. i will put it on every night
before bed
and pretend to be romanticizing the season.

I found this vignette in a notebook from summer 2024 and thought it was worth sharing. I have no memory of writing it, but I'm glad I did.

This is such a timely depiction of materialist culture and how it changes our views on the holidays and changing seasons! I love how this poem is blatant about pretending to romanticize something, something we usually don't admit to ourselves :)
