Ode to Bread

Nothing with flour

no bread

replaced with

matzo meal

potato starch

eggs that are the cost of two books

all of my life necessities in food

gone

replaced with

hard,

crunchy,

cracker-like...

crackers, I guess.

School break is

after

this holiday that

reminds me of my

ancestors

and gives me the

strongest cravings for

bread.

The next week is going to be

hard

without my constant companion

hidden away in a closet

because we aren't willing to actually get rid of our

lifelines

and we aren't quite that

conservative

so this is my

Ode to Bread

and I will

forever mourn my

temporary loss

but not really

because I'm not that dedicated.

    No one died

    right?

    I wasn't affected

    but I am affected.

    I know them

    their situation

    we're good friends

but why is all of this happening in my lifetime?

    In our lifetimes?

  • I don't know

    I find at night

    I am haunted by thoughts.

    Simpler things, like

Math assignment due tomorrow, can I finish it by then?

    or

Did I really turn in the essay or not? I don't remember...

    At school

    we're doing a poetry unit.

"Oh cool, we write poetry all the time!"

    My friend says.

    What we didn't realize, though,

was that the teacher turned on the tap

    to our inner selves
