Camp

Camp

I’ve been going to a camp called Crow's Path since third grade.

And even longer before that, but I can’t remember those days.

People have come and gone, yes, that’s true,

And some stay and some move on,

But those who stay

Are connected for life.

Singing songs of love and unity whilst playing capture the flag,

Carving spoons and pointy sticks and shooting arrows at trees,

Huge foam sword battles where alliances are broken within seconds,

Jumping waves in underwear and bras because some people always forget swimsuits (that’s me),

Singing around a fire about a fire gnome named dale and groovy shirts,

Sitting in grass and telling stories of reincarnated dogs and hanging up wet winter gear after building snowmen all day,

Roasting marshmallows and hotdogs and apple slices at overnights,

Playing dong the gong and going home covered in cuts and ticks but knowing it was worth all that,

Having a story to tell your parents at the dinner table because some kid tried to climb a tree and almost fell super far,

Missing mentors who leave and then loving the new ones,

Becoming an apprentice and then an intern and remembering how small you used to be,

Sharing stories with newer kids about the olden days and how different camp was back then,

And always holding all those memories close to your heart in case you leave one day.
