The play begins at a school auditorium with Harley, Mei, and Grant working on their lines on stage, Harley practicing dialogue to Mei and Mei responding with the two standing on upstage right, Grant is testing his sound cues he made with a speaker on center stage right. Cassidy is downstage left checking her clipboard and reading through the script
Cassidy: (beat) Alright guys! We have been waiting for this day for weeks! I can’t wait for the parents to see my new original play: “A Day to Remember”!
Harley: Ooh I am so excited! What do you think our parents will think sis? Harley bounces up and down a bit excitedly
Cassidy: I am sure they will love it Harley!
Mei: I can’t wait for them to see the sets I painted and Grant’s great sound effects!
Grant: Thanks Mei he says slightly shyly
They cheer
Michael: Um…Hello? Is this the theater club? I’m here for the play.
Cassidy looks behind her, looking at Michael with a hint of worry of what to do about this sudden cast expansion, gripping her clipboard towards her chest, Harley, Mei, and Grant looking past Cassidy with curiosity
Cassidy: Um, hello there! I’m Cassidy, the director of the play. And you are..?
Michael: Oh, my name’s Michael. Nice to meet you.
Cassidy: Hi there Michael! Let me introduce you to the rest of the cast! This is my sister Harley, Mei, and Grant. (she says as she points to each person) We are going to perform a play I wrote for tonight, called “A Day to Remember”.
Michael: Cool! Is there any role I could play?
Grant: Are you sure we should have him in the play? It’s opening night! he whispers to Mei and Harley standing behind Cassidy
The group look at each other for a second, waiting for someone to speak up, then, Cassidy has an idea
Cassidy: Oh! You can play the butler in the play! We do need one of those! she looks at Harley, Mei and Grant for assistance
Harley: Oh yeah! I’m playing the maid, we definitely need a butler too!
Mei: Totally! You would be great as a butler!
Grant nods in agreement
After the role was assigned, the others continued to practice their lines, and Michael listened to them, so he can be caught up on the story to do his best.
*later (the lights go down for a minute), it was time for the performance and everyone got into their costumes and Cassidy stands on down center*
Cassidy: Welcome parents! I am the director, and tonight, me and the other actors have prepared a special original play, a fun drama called “A Day to Remember”. I hope you enjoy it. Let the play begin!
the crowd cheers as they wait for the play to begin
the curtains open to a painted set of inside a mansion, Harley standing in a maid’s dress on upstage right, and Cassidy laying dramatically on a divan couch in a dress on left center
Cassidy: Oh! My loyal maid, how I am so very bored at my loneliness! Aunt Mary should be home by now!
at Cassidy’s seemingly request, Michael in a butler costume walks out with a wooden board on his platter
Cassidy: whispers to Michael What are you doing? I said I was bored! I didn’t ask for a literal board!
Michael: Oh! Sorry! he whispers back
Harley walks up to Cassidy’s aid almost pretending like none of that happened
Harley: Well, what must we do about this? It seems to be so troubling!
Cassidy: I am not sure, but I must go clear my head in the garden!
Cassidy walks through the side door on right center stage to the other side of the set to the garden
*Cassidy walks into the garden and sits down on a chair, and Grant walks in to approach her
Grant: My! Why are you so sad? Especially on such a beautiful day like today?
Cassidy: I am not sure, but I am looking forward to possibly receiving a letter to my aunt who’s visiting soon.
Grant: Well, that’s nice! And look, here’s the mailman now!
Michael, who’s also playing the mailman, walks up to Cassidy and hands her a piece of paper with the letter “A” on it
Cassidy: What is this? I asked for the letter!
Michael: You asked for a letter, so I gave you an A, just like you asked!
Cassidy facepalms herself, she still takes the “letter” and improvises what they had planned for her to read
Cassidy: “To my dearest niece, how it is so nice for me to write to you at this moment! I must tell you that I have such good news to tell when I visit you. But for now, I will be waiting for my journey home to end. Love, Aunt Mary.”
meanwhile in the other side of the living room set, Michael the butler and Harley the Maid are preparing a cake in the kitchen for the soon arriving Aunt
Harley: Although Ms. Abigail is feeling sad, we mustn't have this ruin our time for Aunt Mary’s arrival! I know! I will bake one of my famous delicious cakes for us to enjoy! Butler, can you get me some eggs, flour, sugar, milk, baking powder, and vanilla?
Michael: Yes ma’am!
He soon walks back in with the sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla, and baking powder, but instead of flour he brought some actual flowers!
Harley, not expecting this, clears her throat
Harley: What is this? I asked for flour, not flowers! Where did you even get those?
Michael shrugs, but in the script, Harley is actually supposed to make the cake, so Harley tries to still use the flowers for the cake
Harley mixes in the ingredients, the flowers now covered in the eggs, milk, and other ingredients. Nonetheless, Harley sticks to the script
Harley: Mmm! Looks (beat) Just how my mother used to make it…
she puts it in the pretend oven to be actually baked behind the set, and they hear a knock on the door
Cassidy and Harley walk back into the Living room set and they open the pretend door, and in comes in Aunt Mary, who is played by Mei
Michael: That’s odd…You don’t look like an ant, where are your other legs and antennae?
Harley: Michael! She isn’t actually an ant! She is playing an aunt! she says to him
Michael: Ohh, well, let me take your coat, your insectness!
Cassidy and Harley rub their heads at his antics
Cassidy: How have you been Aunt Mary? And how is Uncle?
Mei: Oh he’s doing fine, though now less lively than he was when we tied the knot when we were young… she says, pretending to reminisce
Hearing her supposed ask, Michael walks out with a rope and ties Mei up
Harley gets up and grabs the cake from the oven, still with the flowers in it.
Mei: sounding a bit strained from the rope Other than that, I have gotten you a gift my dear! A nice bouquet of flowers from my travels! she hands Cassidy the bouquet, but many flowers are missing
Cassidy: Oh, these are…Beautiful.
Harley walks in with the flower cake, and sets it down for them to eat, and they each take a bite
Cassidy: Mm, this cake smelled better than a field of fresh *gulps* flowers.
Mei nods, unable to say much to the bad tasting cake, then she yawns
Mei: Oh my dear, I am so very tired. I must go to bed and hit the hay.
then michael throws a hay bale prop from the garden set at Mei, thinking she literally wanted him to hit her with hay
Mei falls onto the floor
Cassidy: Well it surely was A Day to Remember!
the curtains close
